Our Vision & Strategic Mission
MICROCRAFT’s ambition is to establish a UK national platform for open-access microfabrication with design support and hands-on skills training in MEMS/NEMS, bridging the gap from research to sustainable innovation.
Strategic Rationale
Micro- and nano-electromechanical systems underpin critical technologies from medical devices and AI hardware to quantum sensors and telecommunications. However, the UK currently lacks sovereign prototyping capabilities, leading to reliance on overseas facilities, extended lead times, higher cost, and increased IP risk.
MICROCRAFT is designed to address this infrastructure gap and reinforce the UK’s resilience and competitiveness in semiconductor innovation.
Our Core Values
- Access – Lowering entry barriers with subsidised MPW runs, first-time user support, and transparent pricing
- Capability – Leveraging world-class facilities and design tools to enable high-performance device prototyping
- Community – Building a diverse ecosystem through inclusive engagement, training, and collaboration
What We Will Offer
- Shared MPW runs
- Custom prototyping for advanced MEMS/NEMS devices
- Design enablement toolkits, including PDKs, DRCs, and layout guidance
- Practical training programs to support the UK semiconductor skills development
- Inclusive access policies for academics, SMEs, and new users
Powered By…
Hosted at the University of Southampton’s Zepler Cleanrooms, one of Europe’s premier microfabrication facilities and in collaboration with the University of Bristol, experts in electronic design automation, we bring together infrastructure and design excellence in one unified platform.
Status & Roadmap
MICROCRAFT is currently in the development phase, seeking for funding. If successful, we plan to launch early access MPW runs, bespoke prototyping services, and skills training initiatives.
